You are going to want to all you fab work first Welding,grinding.....Then Clean the area that is going to be worked on with Marine Clean (Mixed 1:1 with HOT water). Or any WATER BASED cleaner that you may have at Home. Then rinse this off with good CLEAN water. Next you are going to ETCH the metal with Metal Ready.Spay the Metal Ready Straight to the surfaced being worked on, Let this soak for a good 30-45 Minutes. Then Rinse the Metal Ready off with good clean water.Apply one coat of the POR-15 Paint let it dry for 4-8 hours depends on humidty. Then Epoxy Putty/POR-Patch to fill the seam and any Cracks/Pits that may have been overlooked. After applying the fillers and working them smooth. This is where you will apply the next coat POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint.

The POR-15 Paint is UV sensitive and will need some kind of topcoat to protect it from fading color.

Can a normal primer be applied over the top of the por-15 to prevent the uv sensitivity until a color coat is applied?

the 1st coat of por is rather glossy will this make it difficult to get the second coat to adhear? and is a normal acrylic primer ok to use on top of the 2nd coat whilst it is still tacky?

Hi Craig,

I'm not a POR expert, but what i've done before applying the second layer of POR is roughen the surface of the previous layer with a piece of scotch brite.
If you want to apply a topcoat you have to apply a intermediate primer coat, the website of POR suggests to use Tie coat primer or self etching primer.
After that you can apply any top coat.

Regards,

Geert Keizer

hi thankyou for your reply
I took a guess in the end and rubbed it back till the gloss came off then added a second coat after about 2hrs i
applied a dust coat of etch primer , then a full coat of etch primer after that so i hope all goes well with it.

Sorry for the inconvience but this is exactly what i would have done except fro the sanding or the POR-15 there is no need to sand por will stick to por no matter the situation but you would have known that if i had been able to get on this site and post this info for you this site has been down oon our end and we have been fighting our service provider to repair it for month now sorry for the inconvience and im am here to help with any situation.
