POR-15 Engine Enamels

The POR-15 Engine Enamel you purchase from POR-15 are different from other engine enamels on the market. Compare ours to others you’ve used such as VHT or Kylon, and you’ll find that it covers better, has superior depth and clarity, brilliant color and gloss. No primer is required, just be sure your engine is clean and grease-free before painting.
This product is formulated to be the finest engine paint available, with a richness and depth of color unsurpassed by any other paint of its type. The finest pigments and color ingredients have been used in sufficient quantities to insure a composition of 80% solids, which means more paint on your engine and less solvent dissipated into the atmosphere like others.
Paints are composed of many different chemicals, but to simplify the matter there are basically two components in every formulation:
1) The paint mix, which includes resins, pigments, surfactants, other coloring agents, adhesion promoters, etc.
2) The solvent (also called the carrier), which causes the paint mix to act like paint and coat properly, it also thins the paint mix, and, after application, evaporates into the atmosphere, leaving behind the paint solids as a coating.
Paints that dry quickly have a higher percentage of fast-evaporating solvents in them, and so multiple coats are necessary to cover properly and give depth and clarity to the finish. When a paint contains a high percentage of solvent such as Spray Can Type Engine Paints, that necessarily means it contains a lower percentage of paint, or solids. Solvent is cheap, and the solids in a paint formulation are expensive; is it any wonder many paints contain a high percentage of solvents? Since solvent quickly disappears after application through evaporation, you may find yourself short-changed when your paint job is done.
POR-15 Engine Enamels are slow dry Engine Enamels due to the high solid content. Unlike spray on auto parts store type engine paints that dry quickly due to high solvent content. This gives the manufactures a cheap way to manufacutre the paint. This also allows the paint to be used via a spray can. Any paint that can be packaged in a spray can are low solids and the majority of the product is cheap solvent to allow the paint to be sprayed easily. Solvent is cheap, paint solids are not. Thus the reason for the higher cost of well made paints such as POR-15 paints.

POR-15 Engine Enamel Application:
Apply in well-ventilated area only. Ideal ambient temperature for application is 70oF(22OC), but an acceptable temperature range is between 50-80oF(12-28OC). Mix POR-15 Engine Enamels by stirring only. Do not shake. This can cause air to be trapped within the paint causing cosmetic issues.
Surfaces to be coated must be free of grease, oil, grit, rust, and other foreign material that might impede proper adhesion. We suggest using our Marine Clean for such preperation. Rough surfaces on engine castings or other cast iron need no further preparation, but smooth surfaces, especially shiny smooth surfaces, should be treated with POR-15 Metal-Ready before painting. Do not use this product to coat exhaust systems. For such application we recomend out High Temp products, also avilable on our website.
Thinning Ratio:
Do not thin more than 20% (1 part thinner to 5 parts enamel). Thin with POR15 solvent ONLY. POR-15 Engine Enamels can usually be brushed without thinning. A full coat will cover completely with excellent color depth. If a second coat is desired, wait 24 hours before topcoating. Dry Time: Allow 8 hours for enamel to dry tack-free. Wait 4-6 days before starting engine. Again, these are VERY SLOW DRYING enamels. As we use less solvent and more pigments a much longer dry time is required. The wait is well worth it. You will not belive the finish you will see once the paint has fully cured.
